Member Spotlight - Katie Giglio
Each month we will feature a different member of our CrossFit Nashville community in our 'Member Spotlight'. We will ask them to share part of their life with us as well as their CrossFit story.

Katie Giglio

How long have you been a member of CrossFit Nashville?

I've been a member of CFN since May 2013. I joined when I moved back to Nashville after grad school.

What do you do outside of the gym? Tell us about your life:

At home: If you walked into my apartment on any given weeknight, there's a good chance I'm probably lying on the couch watching reality tv.

At work: I'm a speech-language pathologist at Ashland City Elementary School. I love my job and helping my tiny humans learn to listen and talk. At the end of the day, I feel like I learn more from them than they do from me.

What are your favorite things to do outside of the gym?

Outside of the gym, I like to hang out with people from the gym. I couldn't get away from CFN if I tried :). My parents also live in Nashville and I go to their house most Sundays to eat lunch and play with our dog, Molly. I also enjoy going to the movies and taking long, sometimes expensive, walks through Target.

What is your favorite music for the gym? Outside the gym?

I'll workout to just about anything, except EDM or screamo. If I could pick the playlists, it'd probably be a lot of boy bands and 90s music.

Outside of the gym, I listen to a little bit of everything. Usually, I'll find a song/artist and have it on repeat for at least 2 weeks. Right now, it's Bruno Mars. Some of my longtime favorites are Fleetwood Mac, John Mayer, Kasey Musgraves, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Billy Joel, and Tom Petty... yeah, a little bit of everything.

Why do you do CrossFit?

The short answer is that I do CrossFit for my health and fitness, but it's become so much more than that for me.

What, if anything has surprised you about CrossFit since starting?

The fact that 4 years later, I'm still doing CrossFit. Constant variation means it's never boring! I love that there is no ceiling in this sport; you can always get faster, go heavier, or learn something new. I'm also surprised at how many different people from different walks of life I have met and how we can all relate to each other because of our shared interest in CrossFit.

What have you enjoyed most about CrossFit?

I love our community at CFN.  They make me want to be better every day. The friendships I've made here are so special and unique.

What makes you come in and work out on a day that you don’t want to?

That doesn't happen very often! I love working out, even if there are certain workouts I don't particularly want to do. I always feel better after working out.

What are your favorite movements/WODs?

I love deadlifts, bar muscle ups, jerks, and handstand walks. My favorite WOD is DT.

Do you follow a specific diet?

I count macros.

It’s Saturday night and you’re ready for a cheat meal. What are you having?

Give me all the pizza!

What goals in or out of the gym do you have for the next year?

In the gym, I would like to get better and more consistent at ring muscle ups.  I'd like to snatch 140# and clean and jerk 180#. I'd also like to improve my mobility.

Outside of the gym, I'd like to take more continuing education credits for work so I can better serve my kiddos.

What is something that nobody at the gym knows about you?

I'm conversationally fluent in American Sign Language.

What are you most proud of in your life?

I'm most proud of my career as an SLP. Not everyone gets to go to work every day and do something they love. I'm glad that I found something that I am passionate about and am always wanting to learn more about and be better at.

How has CrossFit Nashville changed your life?

CrossFit Nashville has enhanced my life in so many ways. I am healthier and fitter than I've ever been in my life. I'm also happier. The atmosphere at CFN is so positive and encouraging. It's such a huge part of my life and I can't imagine my life without it.
